Chinese Seniors dance up cash for Performing
Arts Centre
Support continues to build for the still under construction
Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts. Jackie Lee,
Richmond Hill Chinese Seniors' Association president, presented
a cheque to Mayor David Barrow at Town Council on Monday night
in the amount of $5,200.
The money was raised by the Seniors' Association via a dinner
and dance event, held earlier this year.
"We wanted to organize a party that would raise money
for the theatre and send a message to the community that when
it is built, the Performing Arts Centre will bring great things
to our town," Mr. Lee said.
"We were able to get more than 300 people to participate
and it was such a success that we are planning another dance
and when we are ready, we will send out invitations to all
of you," Mr. Lee added.
Funds raised by the Richmond Hill Chinese Seniors' Association
will be added to those already secured from the Raise the
Curtain Fundraising Campaign, which includes a seat sale,
the Canada Day turtle race event and private-public partnerships.
Mayor Barrow said he took in the Chinese Seniors' Association
gala and was impressed by the energy displayed out on the
dance floor.
"It was great to see so many people dancing and enjoying
themselves, those 300 people in attendance are in better shape
than I am," he said laughing.
Opportunities remain for those interested in supporting the
Raise the Curtain Campaign and tickets are currently on sale
for the Centre for the Performing Arts' first season.
