New Funding for YCH’s Emergency Department

Richmond Hill - MPP Reza Moridi brought good news with him when he visited YCH on Friday, May 30. Moridi announced that York Central Hospital will be receiving $1.32 million in funding to help reduce wait times in York Central Hospital’s Emergency Department. He also shared that the Central Local Health Integration Network received $1.59 million to help provide
community alternatives to hospital care so that hospitals can free-up acute care beds for patients needing to be admitted from hospital Emergency Departments.

“Reducing ER wait times will improve patient satisfaction and enhance patient confidence in our health care system,” said Reza Moridi. “We’re helping York Central Hospital take steps to reduce wait times in the emergency room and also providing people with alternatives to hospital care wherever appropriate.”

The funding is part of a $109 million investment by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care to reduce waiting times in 23 hospitals across the province. Despite the unfortunate reference in much of the newspaper coverage as these hospitals having the poorest performing Emergency Rooms, according to the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care backgrounder, the funding was awarded to support hospitals facing the greatest wait time pressures. Other hospitals receiving the ER funding include Mount Sinai, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Centre, University Health Network, Sunnybrook Health Sciences and Trillium Health Centre just to name a few.

Here at York Central, the funds will be used to support a number of new initiatives recently introduced by our ER to reduce wait times and enhance the quality of care including a Rapid Treatment Zone, Pediatric Rapid Treatment Clinic and our new electronic Patient Tracking technology. We look forward to the partial opening of our newly built Emergency Department on Level 2 of our new north wing in late July, with our fully expanded facility to be completed in the Spring of 2009.
