Theatre season unveiled
Richmond Hill
The stage is nearly set.
On Wednesday, the inaugural season of the Richmond Hill Centre
for the Performing arts is to be unveiled, at Cosmo Music,
in their new home at 10 Via Renzo Way. Town leaders, members
of the arts community and partners in the theatre construction
will catch a glimpse of what’s to come.
Theatre manager Michael Grit has spent the last year travelling
the world, booking acts for the centre, which includes a 631-seat
main hall and a 150-seat rehearsal hall.
The theatre box office officially opens to all patrons Wednesday.
You can go to richmondhill.ca or call 905-737-8811 and sign
up to be a theatre member, which allows you to access performance
details, enjoy discounts and purchase tickets in advance of
the general public.
Ground was broken on the facility in October 2006 and the
centre’s logo was revealed last October, kicking off
a one-year countdown to the opening.
Partnerships were announced with the Asian-Canadian fu-GEN
Theatre, and Modern Times Stage Company.
The centre, which incorporates the Old Town Hall and includes
a public plaza, was designed by Toronto’s Diamond and
Schmitt Architects.
Billed as the biggest public project in Richmond Hill’s
history, approximately $12 million in cash and land value
was pledged by the town for the project, which includes a
$30 million Raise the Curtain fundraising campaign.
The town hosted pre-season events which conclude with free
high-definition screenings of the opening ceremonies of the
Beijing Olympic Games on Aug. 8 at 8 p.m. on 12 of the screens
at Silver City Richmond Hill.
The theatre’s grand opening is scheduled for Nov. 1.
