2008 goals and challenges
No time to slow down, 2008 has begun and the Greater Toronto
Area mayors have work to do. Continuing from last week, this
is the second of a three-part series on projects, organizational
goals and challenges GTA municipal councils expect to face
in the coming months.
This week features York Region mayors’ responses to
three questions and in the answers you will read that East
Gwillimbury will be creating a new development charge by-law,
King will look to launch and hire staff for its environmental
energy program and Newmarket will be beefing up its downtown
core.
Novae Res Urbis asked all 24 GTA mayors what their biggest
budget pressure would be this year; whether there would be
any organizational changes at the municipal offices; and what
developments local residents and businesses would see in the
coming months. We received 17 responses.
RICHMOND HILL MAYOR DAVE BARROW
A1: Biggest budget pressures come from the opening of the
centre for the performing arts, the building of a new fire
hall and the reduction in tax revenues due to the lack of
infrastructure to allow residential buildings.
A2: We are finishing our organizational review in a number
of areas early in 2008, so the changes, if any, will be implemented.
I do not want to prejudge any changes from that process.
A3: The biggest additions to our community in 2008 will
be the performing arts centre, Crosby fully accessible park
and our Access RH call centre to serve our residents more
effectively.
