Chinese New Year

Richmond Hill - This year, the Chinese celebrate the Year of the Pig, which begins on February 18, 2007. Celebrations typically last for 15 days, during which families feast extensively and the young receive red packets of money from their parents and older relatives. If you were born in 1935, 1947 - (the year our new Mayor was born), 1959, 1971, 1983 or 1995, this is your year! You are an extremely loyal friend and have a great thirst for knowledge. You are most compatible with those born in the year of the Rabbit or Sheep.

Come join the Celebration!
The Mayor is hosting a Chinese New Year celebration on Thursday, March 1, 2007. Proceeds from this event will also benefit the Mayor’s Endowment Fund for the Arts. To purchase tickets, please call (905) 771-5485.

Mayor Dave Barrow is hosting the Town’s first Chinese New Year Celebration at Dun Huang Chinese Cuisine in Richmond Hill on Thursday, March 1, 2007. Held in honour of Richmond Hill’s Chinese community, proceeds from this event will also benefit the Mayor’s Endowment Fund for the Arts.

At a news conference held earlier today, Mayor Barrow said, “Richmond Hill is home to residents and business owners from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds, and it is important that we share in the celebration of Chinese New Year with our Chinese community. I am delighted to be hosting this celebration for the first time and look forward to joining in the festivities.”

Proceeds from ticket sales will raise much-needed funds for the arts through the newly-created Mayor’s Endowment Fund for the Arts. The Fund will contribute to the arts in Richmond Hill by providing local arts groups and individual artists with the opportunity to apply for grants to sponsor programs and performances.

Participants of the celebration will feast on a traditional nine-course Chinese meal while being entertained by performances by a lion dance group, a Chinese string music group, the Orient Dance Company and Yip’s Chamber/Choral School.

This celebration is the first of many events Mayor Barrow plans to host in recognition of the rich ethnic traditions that characterize Richmond Hill. In March, Mayor Barrow will also be observing Nowruz, the Persian New Year, with a similar event.

For tickets to The Mayor’s Celebration of the Chinese New Year, please contact Michael Grit at (905) 771-5485.
